Finally, a little break from sailing

I know, you thought you would never hear me utter those words. But it has been an action packed week on the water and I think everyone is glad for a little break. The wind had been getting a little lighter each day and we were sailing bigger gear each day. With fewer folks at the hotel there were times when we had more Vela staff on the water than guests. Needless to say, the croquet set has still been getting some serious use.

We have some changes at Vela this last week. Thomas and Maurits have returned to Holland a little earlier than scheduled. We didn't have many pre-booked kite lessons for them, so they packed up Kirra the dog in a travel crate, got the necessary paperwork from the vet, and flew home. The same day saw the arrival of Meredith, our new windsurf instructor from Berkeley. She has adjusted to life in Baja very easily and has been busy with beginner lessons already. Claude will be heading back to Montreal this weekend to deal with some unfortunate family business. We will be a little short-handed for the end of the season. Luckily we only have two guests during our final week so we will be able to start boxing up the equipment and breaking down the center a little early.

The calmer days have given us the chance to use the stand-up paddleboards some more. I have taken Ginger out for a few long paddle sessions. She loves swimming alongside me as we cruise out past the boats and buoys, checking out the fish and sea life. We had a little photo shoot with the longboards the other evening, trying the traditional surfer pose, but it was too windy and we couldn't hold them up straight for long enough!
